Community Technology Help Desk

Starting in fall 2021, the Community Technology Help Desk will offer free technology assistance to individuals and organizations in Southern Virginia. This service will be accessible by phone or video call. The trained help desk technicians will help people with troubleshooting things like setting up an email account or answering basic software questions. The overall goal is to help more people participate in today’s digital economy, where technology is a huge part of daily life.

The Community Technology Help Desk will be staffed by student volunteers who are in the fall 2021 course ITE 181 – User Support/Help Desk Principles being offered by Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC). The course will be open to students from SVCC, Danville Community College (DCC) and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC). If you are already a student at one of these institutions, contact your advisor to let them know you’d like to sign up for the new IT Help Desk course. If you’re not already a student, contact any of these institutions to learn how to enroll.

Background

The Community Technology Help Desk is an exciting collaboration among Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC), Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), Danville Community College (DCC) and Longwood University Cormier Honors College, facilitated by the SOVA Innovation Hub. SVHEC, SVCC, and DCC students will support the help desk by serving as help desk technicians. Longwood Honors students will support the help desk by marketing the service to communities throughout the Southern Virginia region.

The mission of the Community Technology Help Desk is two-fold:

  • help more people participate in today’s digital economy, where technology is a huge part of daily life
  • provide students with real-world work experience and the opportunity to give back to the community by supporting the help desk
