Introducing the Future Fab Lab at the SOVA Innovation Campus
We are excited to be in the early planning stages of a state-of-the-art Fab Lab at the SOVA Innovation Campus in South Boston, Virginia. This future facility aims to foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration for entrepreneurs, businesses, students, and community members in Halifax County and surrounding areas.
Early Vision for the SOVA Fab Lab
At this initial visioning stage, we are conceptualizing the SOVA Fab Lab to be a space equipped with advanced digital fabrication tools, including: 3D printers, laser cutters, and electronics workstations. These resources will empower individuals to design and create prototypes, supporting educational initiatives, entrepreneurial endeavors, and personal projects. The SOVA Fab Lab will be located on the SOVA Innovation Campus, which includes 715 Wilborn Avenue and 801 Wilborn Avenue.
What is a Fab Lab?
A Fab Lab, or Fabrication Laboratory, is a type of digital makerspace equipped with advanced manufacturing tools and technology for design, prototyping, and small-scale production of physical and digital products. Through the Fab Foundation, there is a network of over 2,000 Fab Labs worldwide that are equipped with tools such as 3D printers and scanners, laser cutters, CNC machines, computers, and software.
What is a Makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative workspace where individuals gather to create, learn, and share resources. These spaces can be found in schools, libraries, or separate public or private facilities and cater to people of all ages. Makerspaces provide access to a range of equipment, from high-tech tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines to low-tech materials such as cardboard, Legos, and art supplies. The core idea is to foster a maker mindset, encouraging individuals to create something out of nothing and explore their own interests. (Source: makerspaces.com, 2025)
What is a Digital Makerspace?
A digital makerspace is a physical, collaborative workspace that emphasizes digital creation and innovation. Unlike traditional makerspaces, which may focus on activities like woodworking or crafting, digital makerspaces are equipped with advanced technological tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and computers with specialized software. These resources enable users to engage in activities like digital design, fabrication, and multimedia production. The goal is to foster creativity, learning, and collaboration in the realm of digital technology. (Source: University of Virginia, Learning Design & Technology, 2025)
