SOVA Innovation Hub Launches Career Boost Program
New Program Gives Southern Virginia Citizens Access to Resume Reviews and Mock Interviews to Help Them Stand Out in Hiring Process
January 4, 2021 (South Boston, VA) – The SOVA Innovation Hub announced a new program today called Career Boost that will be starting in January 2021. The goal of the SOVA Innovation Hub is to spark economic transformation in Southern Virginia, and the two-step Career Boost program was created to help fulfill that goal by giving citizens of Southern Virginia the opportunity to boost their careers and stand out in the hiring process by providing resume reviews and mock interviews.
The first step of the two-step program will be to complete a virtual resume review. The participant’s resume will be reviewed to make sure it highlights the candidate’s best skills and abilities. Resumes willalso be scanned for spelling and grammatical errors, and the team will provide suggestions on wording and format. These sessions are 30 minutes long and resumes (or a list of skills, abilities, and experience) will be requested 24 hours in advance to be reviewed by the team before the scheduled session.
Step two is completing a virtual mock interview. COVID-19 has made virtual employment interviews the new normal. During the mock interview, interviewees will have a chance to practice answering some common interview questions. This interview is also a great opportunity to test virtual interview setup – making sure internet connection is strong enough, lighting is bright enough, and surroundings are ready for a virtual interview. Mock interviews are 20 minutes long.
This program is free and open to all job seekers in Halifax, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Lunenburg, and Brunswick Counties in Virginia. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, at this time all Career Boost resume reviews and mock interviews will be conducted online by way of a Microsoft Teams meeting.Participants are not required to have a Teams account to join these meetings, however certain internet browser requirements are needed to join the meetings on a desktop or laptop computer. If joining themeeting on a mobile device, the participant will need to download the Microsoft Teams app.
